Metehan

Törer

Metehan Törer is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice is rooted in sculpture and ceramics and extends to include drawing, performance, and installation. He focuses on the transformation of figurative and everyday objects, creating characters marked by unserious, depressive, mocking, inconsistent, obsessive, and fetishized behaviors — figures that resist gender norms and exist within a liminal space he defines as the “third world.”

This fictional yet emotionally dense realm draws from autobiographical fragments, dreams, esoteric symbols, and rituals surrounding death and burial. However, Törer does not confine himself to personal or referential domains; instead, he transmutes these elements into allegorical and cyclical narratives that gesture toward a more universal state of being. In this “third world,” time is not linear — events repeat endlessly, echoing the metaphysical stasis and suffering of mythological underworlds.

Although his visual language may initially appear playful, humorous, or colorful, his works are conceptually grounded in grief, pain, obsession, and grotesque sensuality. Forms that resemble ceremonial objects, queer fetishes, and fragmented bodies form the symbolic backbone of his practice.

In recent years, Törer’s research has expanded around themes such as the architecture of grief, ritual embodiment, and the invisibility of queer death. His sculptural works are often accompanied by performances or site-specific installations that create psychic interior spaces — silent fountains, haunted gardens, or anatomical landscapes. These environments do not offer closure; instead, they invite the viewer into suspended states of being, like dreams that remember more than they reveal.

Through this hybrid and performative language, Metehan Törer continues to develop an artistic vocabulary rooted in excess, contradiction, and embodied resistance.
